Betsy Schulz’s design for the Shipstead backyard illustrates how a small outdoor space can be transformed into a lovely, functional outdoor room. The slate patio was extended from the house, and a fountain and fire pit were added as a focal point for the seating area. Schulz had-sculpted the fountain tiles to add interest and beauty to the water feature. A succulent wall livens up the plain white fence. The plantings are all low-water varieties, including the Dymondia, which replaced the grass. Boulders add a natural feel around stepping stones that lead from the main house to the garage.
